Prepositions are function words that show the relation between a noun or noun phrase to the rest of the sentence. Prepositions can express temporal or spatial relationships (in, on, after, or since), or show a more abstract relationship. In this case, the most appropriate preposition depends on the surrounding words (dependent prepositions). Dependent prepositions don’t have a clear pattern.
Be careful: if you choose the wrong preposition, it can alter the meaning of the phrase. Dictionaries are your friend if unsure.
Incorrect A lot people turned out for the election. Correct A lot of people turned out for the election. Incorrect Jimmy is waiting the results. Correct Jimmy is waiting for the results.
