Capitalize the first word after a semicolon only when it’s a proper noun or an acronym.

Common pitfalls to avoid: don’t use a semicolon with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or) to join clauses, don’t attach a dependent clause to an independent clause with a semicolon, and avoid overusing semicolons when varying sentence structure would improve flow.

Check both sides: each clause must be able to stand alone as a sentence.

When using a conjunctive adverb, put the semicolon before it and a comma after it (e.g., “I tried; however, it failed.”).

In complex lists, use semicolons to separate items that contain internal commas for clarity.

Keep style consistent-don’t mix heavy semicolon use with many short sentences unless you want a staccato effect.

FAQ

Can I use a semicolon before a coordinating conjunction like “and”?

Generally no. Use a comma + coordinating conjunction to join independent clauses, or use a semicolon without the conjunction. An exception is complex lists where semicolons separate items that themselves contain commas.

Should the word after a semicolon be capitalized?

No-capitalize after a semicolon only for proper nouns and acronyms.
