Did you know shop<\/strong> is a verb as well as a noun? But usually, in English, we say do the shopping<\/g><\/strong> or go shopping, although you could also shop, or go to the shop, or go to the store.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shopping<\/strong> is necessary whatever language you speak, so here is some of the very best shopping vocabulary<\/strong> for you to use when shopping in English<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When shopping, once you have selected the item you want to buy, you need to pay. You can pay in cash<\/strong> or by credit card<\/strong>, or if you are shopping online<\/strong>, then there may be other options such as PayPal. If you pay in cash, you may need to wait for your change<\/strong>. And then you get your receipt<\/strong>, which you need to keep in case you need to bring the item back<\/strong>, or exchange it<\/strong> in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going shopping or doing the shopping?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An important distinction to make is if you are going shopping<\/strong> (looking around the shops as a fun activity) or doing the shopping<\/strong> (buying necessary items). Whereas going shopping is a popular activity on a Saturday afternoon, for example, doing the shopping is a chore<\/strong> (job) that needs to be performed every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the supermarket<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you need to do the shopping<\/strong> (get all the essential items required for the house, such as food<\/strong> and cleaning products<\/strong>), then a supermarket<\/strong>, or a hypermarket,<\/strong> is the best place to go. A smaller version is a convenience store<\/strong>, but it will cost a lot more money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you arrive at the supermarket, if you are doing a big shop<\/strong>, then a trolley<\/strong> will be required instead of a basket<\/strong>. Then you begin walking up and down the aisles<\/strong>, looking for items that you need. When you are ready to pay, you go to the checkout<\/strong> where the cashier<\/strong> can help you, unless you choose to go to the self-service checkout<\/strong>, which is now common.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you choose to buy your items from individual stores, rather than all in one place at the supermarket, then you may start at the butcher\u2019s<\/strong>, to buy all your meat<\/strong>. Then it\u2019s off to the greengrocer\u2019s<\/strong> to get all the fruit<\/strong> and vegetables<\/strong> you need. Perhaps you may go to the bakery<\/strong> to get bread<\/strong> and cakes<\/strong>, or the pharmacy<\/strong> (chemist<\/strong> \u2013 U.K.) to get any medicines<\/strong> or personal hygiene products<\/strong>. A cash n\u2019 carry<\/strong> is a good option to buy essential items in big quantities to save money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The liquor store<\/strong> (off-licence<\/strong> \u2013 U.K.) will stock all your alcohol<\/strong> requirements, while a hardware store<\/strong> will have all the essential items you need to do D.I.Y.<\/strong> (Do It Yourself<\/strong>) jobs around the house, such as hang pictures<\/strong> or fix<\/strong> things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A deli<\/strong> is a good place to go for fresh food<\/strong> items, and you can also pick up sandwiches<\/strong> and fresh salads<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going shopping<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You may choose to go shopping<\/strong> with friends on a Saturday afternoon. You may need to buy something, or you may just be window shopping<\/strong> (having a look for fun). Another word you can use in a shop is \u2018browsing\u2019<\/strong>, meaning having a look around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shop Assistant:<\/strong> \u201cMay I help you?\u201d<\/p>

Customer:<\/strong> \u201cNo thank you, I\u2019m just browsing<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

If you are shopping for clothes, then it\u2019s important to try on<\/strong> the items before you buy them, to make sure they fit<\/strong> you (the size is good), and that they suit<\/strong> you (the style and color is good for you). If you need to take back<\/strong> items, then make sure you keep your receipt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

A great place to pick up items at cheaper prices is a thrift store<\/strong> (charity shop<\/strong> \u2013 U.K.). You may find a bargain<\/strong> here (something which is great value for money).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Department stores<\/strong> are a good place to find lots of different items such as clothes<\/strong>, shoes<\/strong> and electrical goods<\/strong>. Or you could pay a visit to the mall<\/strong> (shopping center<\/strong> \u2013 U.K.) to find all the popular stores in one convenient location<\/g>, as well as cafes<\/strong> and restaurants<\/strong>. You can enjoy a real day out here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And don\u2019t forget to wait for the sales<\/strong>, when many items are sold at a discount<\/strong>, with sometimes as much as 75% off<\/strong>. Black Friday<\/strong> \u2013 the Friday after Thanksgiving \u2013 is a good example. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
